Sustainable Fashion for Clean Water Around the Globe
For the first time since the pandemic, our Earth Month fashion shows were back in person. Tuesday, April 26, 2022, The Institute of Beauty and Wellness Milwaukee hosted their Catwalk for Water at South Second and a week later the Madison campus had their show at The Overture Center for the Arts. It was two evenings of stunning fashion, fun, and bustling creativity from the industry’s best up-and-coming beauty professionals.
Students created outfits completely out of repurposed materials and finished the looks with hair, makeup, and nails. Looks from both Milwaukee and Madison’s IBW student body were showcased to the judges with hopes of winning the grand prize: a $1,000 scholarship. Teams had their model judged on the hair, makeup, and overall visual cohesiveness. This event has dual purposes. First, the goal was to promote critical and creative thinking within the student body while producing impressive looks with limited supplies. Second, the Catwalk For Clean Water event draws attention to our Earth Month fundraising, with all ticket sales benefiting local partner Urban Ecology Center and global partner Charity:Water.
The beauty industry creates over 877 pounds of waste every single minute. As an Aveda school, IBW faculty and students work tirelessly year-round to create a learning environment with a very small carbon footprint. From utilizing 100% vegan products that are completely manufactured with renewable wind energy, to working annually with non-profit partners such as Charity:Water, the student body has a heavy focus on environmental sustainability. Earth Month is a thread woven throughout the curriculum of these students.
