In the Spotlight: Ayurvedic Cooking

AVEDA Ingredients on Black Background

Ayurveda is an ancient science aimed at preventing and healing imbalances within the body.  Our 1000-hour Ayurveda Esthetic Program provides an integrative and holistic approach to beauty and wellness based on the theory and practices of Ayurveda.

Our Ayurveda Esthetic Class with Instructor, Rima.

A lesser-known fact is the essential part Ayurveda has placed in the fruition of many Aveda products. Horst integrated Ayurveda in his lifestyle and his salon business model. He adopted a holistic thinking, the belief that individual beauty is directly linked to the beauty of the world around us. And that ultimately, beauty comes from within.

His were ideas that would revolutionize the beauty industry.

Our Ayurveda Esthetic Program does just that–it revolutionizes with beauty industry by incorporating centuries-old healing traditions.

One of the most interesting and exciting parts of Ayurveda Curriculum is the time students spend learning about the power of Ayurvedic cooking.

In the first phase of our Ayurveda curriculum, students study the digestive system, the doshas, and how toxins develop. To round off the phase, students participated in several days of cooking classes.

Our Ayurveda Department Leader, Rima shared 5 ways Ayurvedic cooking leads to a more balanced body.

Ayurveda Esthetic Instructor, Rima.

Digestion: Ayurveda teaches us to prepare food keeping in mind that we are what we eat and digest–Ayurvedic principles revolve around the idea that food should be easy to digest for maximum nutrient absorption. We shouldn’t feel sick or tired after we eat, instead we should be nourished and re-energized.

Food Pairings: Ayurveda teaches us proper food combining and which foods are incompatible when eaten together for optimal digestion and heath.

Eat Local, Eat Seasonal: Ayurvedic principals say seasonal eating is the key to heath. When the food is fresh and locally harvested their flavors and nutrients are optimum.

Spice Welcome: Spices and herbs in Ayurvedic cooking are valuable for both flavor and medicinal value. Ayurveda teaches us how to use these spices intelligently to balance the doshas– There must be a balance between our three fundamental bodily doshas called Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Once our doshas are balanced digestion improves, our body can absorb more nutrients, we experience less hormonal fluctuations and overall heath improves.

Only from the Earth: Ayurvedic cooking promotes using freshest, unmodified, whole foods. The great part of Ayurvedic cooking is that it doesn’t limit you–It embraces all types of foods vegetables, fruits, grains, legumes, seeds, fats, meat and spices to teach you how to use them to your benefit.

The past 2 weeks our students have made several Ayurvedic foods like Dal (lentil soup), cilantro chutney (relish), Kitchari (lentil, rice, vegetables), cooked vegetables, tapioca puddings, and mango digestive drink.
