As summer approaches in Chicago, it is the perfect time to enjoy outdoor activities like swimming, running, picnics, and festivals. Let us be real, after the winters we have, we have earned the right to be out in the warmth and sun all day long. However, it is crucial to protect your skin from harmful UV rays during these activities. Here is how you can safeguard your skin while having fun in the sun.
Selecting The Right Sunscreen
Choosing the appropriate sunscreen is essential for effective sun protection. Some key things to look on the label include:
- SPF Rating: opt for sunscreens with at least SPF 30, as they block approximately 97% of UVB rays. Higher SPF ratings offer slightly more protection but remember, no sunscreen blocks 100% of UV rays, in fact after a certain point, the only change is not the protection but the viscosity of the sunscreen. This can sometimes make you more vulnerable to UV rays, simply because you could have a harder time spreading the lotion or hate reapplying it due to the feel of it on the skin.
- Broad-Spectrum Protection: Ensure the sunscreen offers broad-spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB rays. UVA and UVB are two forms of ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. UVA rays have longer wavelengths that penetrate deeper into the skin, contributing to premature aging. In contrast, UVB rays have shorter wavelengths and are responsible for sunburn and an increased risk of skin cancer.
- Water Resistance: For activities like swimming or running, where your skin will be in contact with moisture it is key to choose water-resistant sunscreens that remain effective even when you sweat or come into contact with water.
- Reef Friendly: In recent years it has become more important than ever to keep not only our skin protected but also the environment around us safe. Several ecologically minded areas around the world, like Hawaii, Key West, Bonaire, and the Maldives, require that no merchants and as few tourists use any sunscreen that has dangerous chemicals that, once washed off the body, can harm the aquatic biology in the area. Save the Reef Organization These Chemicals include:
- Oxybenzone
- Octinoxate
- Octocrylene
- Homosalate
- 4-methylbenzylidene camphor
- PABA
- Parabens
- Triclosan
- Any nanoparticles or “nano-sized” zinc or titanium (if it does not explicitly say “micro-sized” or “non-nano” and it can rub in, it is nano-sized)
- Any form of microplastic, such as “exfoliating beads”

Applying Sunscreen Effectively
High SPF is not the only thing required to protect you from the sun. Proper application enhances sunscreen effectiveness.
- Timing: Apply sunscreen 15 to 30 minutes before going outdoors to allow your skin to absorb it fully.
- Quantity: Always read the product descriptions before using but a good rule of thumb is to use about one ounce (a shot glass full) to cover your entire body.
- Reapplication: Reapply every two hours, or more frequently if swimming or sweating.
- Coverage: Be sure you cover as much skin as you can, including frequently skipped places like under the edges of your swimsuit, behind the ears, the scalp, and between your fingers or toes.
Beauty Tip
Hate the white streaks as you rub in your lotion?
Instead of rubbing in circles, pat in your sunscreen especially in areas on your face. This will create less of a white cast from your sunscreen. Just be sure to pat every part of your skin to guarantee you are not missing any spots.
Protective Clothing & Accessories
Travel to any sundrenched tropical country and you will notice quickly that locals are usually covered head to toe. That is because the best protection from the sun is to rarely be exposed at all. Incorporate clothing and accessories designed for sun protection.
- UPF Clothing: UPF, or Ultraviolet Protection Factor, measures how effectively a fabric shields your skin from the sun’s UV rays. The higher the UPF number, the more protection it offers. Specifically, UPF 30 allows only 1/30th of UV radiation through, while UPF 50 permits just 1/50th—meaning only 2% of harmful rays reach your skin. Wear clothing with a UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) rating of at least 30. UPF-rated fabrics block a significant amount of UV radiation, offering an extra layer of protection.
- Wide-Brimmed Hats: Choose hats with wide brims to shade your face, neck, and ears.
- UV-Protective Sunglasses: Your skin is not the only thing that needs protection. Just as vital as avoiding damage to skin you also need to protect your eyes. The cones, rods, and cones are photoreceptor cells in the retina responsible for vision and are incredibly susceptible to light damage. Protect your eyes by wearing sunglasses that block 100% of UVA and UVB rays.
- UV-Protective Hair Products: Using sun protection for hair is important because, just like skin, hair can be damaged by the sun’s UV rays. Prolonged sun exposure can lead to dryness, brittleness, breakage, color fading, and even potential damage to the hair follicle. Hair sun protection helps create a barrier against these harmful rays, minimizing damage and maintaining healthy, vibrant hair.

Activity-Specific Sun Protection Tips
Tailor your sun protection strategy to your chosen activity.
- Swimming: Use water-resistant sunscreens and reapply after swimming. Wearing a rash guard or swim shirt provides additional protection especially for shoulders and upper back that are prone to burning while splashing around.
- Running: Apply sweat-resistant sunscreen and consider wearing a wide-brimmed hat or visor to shield your face from direct sunlight.
- Picnics and Festivals: Seek shaded areas, when possible, wear protective clothing, and apply sunscreen regularly, especially during peak sun hours between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Additional Sun Safety Practices
Beyond products and clothing, adopt habits that enhance sun safety.
- Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to maintain hydration, especially during physical activities in the heat.
- Seek Shade: Whenever possible, stay under shaded areas, especially during peak UV radiation hours.
- Avoid Tanning: Refrain from using tanning beds and tanning lotions as they increase the risk of skin damage and cancer. If you still want that summer glow, look for artificial tanning sprays, lotions, and creams.
