What is Massage Therapy?

Massage therapy has a long history throughout various cultures. Today it’s used to relieve pain, heal injuries, reduce stress, increase relaxation, and promote wellness. At The Institute of Beauty and Wellness, we offer a thorough massage therapy curriculum. If you’re interested in a massage therapy education, you may have some questions.

What Does a Massage Therapist Do?

Massage therapists talk to clients about their symptoms, medical history, and desired results. A massage therapist also evaluates clients to find out which areas of the body are the most painful or tense. Following this evaluation, a massage therapist will work on muscles and soft tissue to ease pain, stiffness, or tension. After the massage, the massage therapist then usually offers clients advice on improving posture. This might include suggestions for stretching, strength training, and relaxation tips.

What Is a Professional Massage Like?

Massage therapists use their hands, fingers, elbows, and forearms to relieve pain and pressure in muscles and soft tissue. This can treat specific injuries or promote general wellness and relaxation. Massages can last anywhere from 15 to 90 minutes.

What Equipment is Used During Massage Therapy?

To make sure clients feel calm, massage therapists may use a variety of products. These range from simple lotions and creams to body oils, essential oils, and aromatherapy diffusers. Depending on the type of massage, a massage therapist can use massage tables, chairs, or mats. Some massage therapists also use candles or medical heat lamps while treating a client. It’s also common for a massage therapist to play soothing music during a massage to enhance relaxation.

What are the Different Types of Massages?

Massage Therapy is a program that we offer at the Institute of Beauty & Wellness.

Massage therapists can specialize in different types of massage. The most common techniques are Swedish massage, deep tissue massage, sports massage, and Shiatsu massage. It’s typical for massage therapists to specialize in more than one technique. Massage therapists choose which technique based on the client’s needs.
