Riley and Kevin: A Dynamic Duo

Having your dream career is one thing, but it’s another thing to work with someone you can call a true friend. 
You know, that person who lifts you up when you’re feeling down.  That person who’s strengths compliment your weaknesses, and vice versa.  That person you learn from – a mentor – that shapes you into a stronger individual.

Well, that’s Riley and Kevin, our Team Leaders at Aveda Institute of Beauty and Wellness.  Although the two met briefly  at a company pool party years ago, Riley and Kevin first bonded when they started working together at IBW in August of 2017.  Since then, our retail sales, the longevity in our team, and overall guest satisfaction has been greater than ever before. 

Everyone, meet Riley and Kevin.


What’s your favorite thing about working together?

R: Kevin is a great communicator. It’s easy for him to make connections and build relationships.
K: I worry less about messing up, because nothing gets passed Riley (chuckles). Riley’s good at making me look good. 

What qualities make you two polar opposites?

K: Riley is way organized. She’s pretty Type-A, and I’m not like that at all.
R: [Riley laughs] I’m not like that outside of work! There’s just so many details at work – you know, dotting i‘s and crossing t‘s.  Kevin is more relaxed than me, and it’s great, because he calms me down.

 What’s Kevin/Riley’s spirit animal, and why?

R: Kevin’s an otter.  Otters are soft, and just kind of float around. They’re easy going.
K: Riley’s an octopus. Octopuses are smart.  They can also change color, and I see Riley change her color to adapt to different situations in the school.

You’re on a deserted island. What Aveda product do you need?

R: Something practical, like the Daily Light Guard.
K: Whatever Aveda product is edible. 

What’s the coolest thing about working at a beauty and wellness institute?

R: Learning never ends. Whether it’s learning from a guest, the students, or the education schedule in the classrooms.
K: It’s hard to pick one thing, but I love when you witness a student reach a milestone. Sometimes the student doesn’t even recognize it, but you’ll recognize it and tell them, and then they’re like oh yeah, I did nail that!  Even if it’s the way a student says goodbye to their guest or sells a piece of retail, I love to see students become more comfortable and confident in this industry. 

What’s your number one goal for 2018?

R: To become an Aveda Ambassador.
K: To become more like Riley.
