Instructor Spotlight: Jeffrey Montoya, President of the American Massage Therapy Association – Wisconsin Chapter

On May 3, 2018 Jeffrey Montoya was installed as the President of the American Massage Therapy Association – Wisconsin Chapter. The chapter includes over 2000 members across the state. Jeffrey is the Team Leader of the Massage Therapy Departments at Institute of Beauty and Wellness in Milwaukee, and sister school Aveda Institute Madison. Additionally, he is an approved provider of continuing and advanced education in massage therapy.

As president of the association’s Wisconsin Chapter, Jeffrey is responsible for the vision and direction of the organization. His goal is to increase membership participation in the various volunteer positions of the chapter. Many volunteer positions have gone unfilled for over a year. Participation of the membership is the key to the organization fulfilling its goals. He plans to utilize his relationships with massage therapists working in various settings in the field.

Jeffrey is also enthusiastic about the potential of legislative activity in 2019. The AMTA Wisconsin chapter has been working on clarifying legislation to include stretching, body treatments and the application of kinetic tape as appropriate by massage therapists. The proposed legislation will also help state licensed massage therapists deal with local ordinances and provide penalties for practicing massage in the state without a license.

Massage therapy is a growing field. Many massage businesses and spas are unable to keep up with the demand for qualified massage therapists.  Jeffrey believes that it is important that massage therapy is promoted as a fulfilling career path for those with an interest in health and wellness.  The Wisconsin AMTA Chapter can provide a powerful voice to promote the industry. The Wisconsin AMTA Chapter was originally founded on May 1, 1955. AMTA was founded in 1943. It has grown to an association with more than 80,000 members.

In addition to teaching, Jeffrey is also a student himself, pursuing a doctorate in health professions education at Logan University.  Learn more about him on Instagram @MontoyaSensei.
