The instructor spotlight is a monthly Q&A blog piece that focuses on why the instructor loves teaching at the Institute of Beauty and Wellness, advice about joining the industry, and more.
INSTRUCTOR: Amy PROGRAM: Cosmetology , Barbering
Q: WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING PART ABOUT BEING AN EDUCATOR?
AMY: The most rewarding thing is working with students who are struggling with a technique and helping them to work through it. It’s an ongoing process; it doesn’t happen in a day or after just one guest. Their perseverance inspires me everyday.
Q: IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT IS THE BIGGEST POINT OF DIFFERENCE THE INSTITUTE OF BEAUTY AND WELLNESS OFFERS?
AMY: The future professionals at IBW excel at their craft, but the biggest point of difference at IBW is the level of professionalism our students begin with at their salon/spa of choice. We have a strong business focus with benchmarking and marketing in terms of self-promotion that drives our students to be more successful right out of the gate.
Q: WHAT IS ONE OF THE MOST FUN EXPERIENCES YOU HAVE HAD AT IBW?
AMY: Driving up to Blaine, MN for the annual tour of Aveda is one of the most memorable times I’ve had at the school. I love Aveda and I love learning how things work/are made, so to tour Research and Development and to speak with teams of people who are using plant resources to create new products every day, that was definitely an experience I treasure.
Q: DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR SOMEONE CONSIDERING THE BEAUTY OR WELLNESS INDUSTRY AS A CAREER OPTION?
AMY: My advice is to practice- practice deliberately and often! I believe this is one of the best industries to be in, but you don’t learn something once and then just know it. You have to relearn and hone your craft not just in school, but throughout your career. If you love learning and you love this industry, you will be in the right place!
Q: WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO AROUND THE CITY OF MILWAUKEE?
AMY: I love Milwaukee festival season! There are fireworks over Lake Michigan almost every weekend as well as great shows and experiences at each festival. We only have beautiful weather for so long in Wisconsin and Milwaukee appreciates that and uses Summer to it’s full advantage.
