22 Apr Earth Day 2020
April 22, 2020 marks the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, which started in Aveda Institute Madison’s backyard right here in Wisconsin. For 50 years, communities around the world have celebrated Earth Day by demonstrating support for environmental protection. As a forward-thinking company, Aveda strives to take care of the planet and its people, not just on Earth Day, but throughout the year. Aveda’s mission statement shows this.
“Our mission at Aveda is to care for the world we live in, from the products we make to the ways in which we give back to society. At Aveda, we strive to set an example for environment leadership and responsibility, not just in the world of beauty, but around the world”.
Although every day is for the planet at Aveda, we dedicate all of April to celebrating Earth Month. Since 1999, Aveda has partnered with a charity each year for Earth Month to work towards our mission, with a focus on clean water and water conservation.

This year, Aveda partnered with Charity: Water. This charity’s goal is to bring clean, safe drinking water to communities that lack access to it in India, Nepal, Madagascar and Ethiopia. Charity: Water believes giving everyone access to clean water has the power to change the world. For example, in some rural communities, women and girls spend hours collecting dirty water, and are responsible for up to 72% of water collected. They spend 40 billion hours a year walking for water. They do not have time to attend school, and this prevents them from earning an income later in life. With access to clean water, these women and girls will have time to go to school and create a future for themselves.
Access to clean water also results in fewer deaths from contaminated water. Charity: Water works with local experts to find the best sustainable solution. Whether it’s a well or rainwater cistern, this organization builds infrastructure that fits each community’s needs and ecosystem. Charity: Water provides training on hygiene and sanitation to educate the people in communities they build in. Children are normally the first ones to learn it in school and then they go home and teach their family.
Charity: Water has brought clean drinking water 11 million people through 51,000 water projects since 2006. As a partner since 2018, Aveda is proud to have contributed to Charity: Water’s mission. As of April 22nd, 2020, Aveda has raised $870,136 and £91,133 and donated $1,030,847 to Charity: Water since our partnership in 2018.

With the outbreak of COVID-19, Aveda’s Earth Month fundraising events and activities have been postponed as people around the state, country and world shelter in place to help protect our vulnerable populations. While the pandemic has affected fundraising efforts for Earth Day charities around the globe, it has also affected the planet itself. With shops, offices and restaurants closed, traffic on the streets is quiet. Our slowdown in society has led to a decrease in pollution and increase in wildlife activity, making for a special 50th anniversary of Earth Day.
Be the first to find out about future dates for our postponed Earth Month activities, as well as other fundraisers and events: sign up for our newsletter and stay in-the-know at Aveda Institute Madison.
