21 Jun 5 Fun Things About Aveda
Aveda has been around since the 1970s, and through all those years they have built up a lot of history! While some things, like the creation of our signature Clove Shampure™ being crafted in a bathtub might be common knowledge we are sure there are a lot of other things about this brand that might surprise you!
Here are five fun things that you may not know about Aveda.

Aveda salons and schools have a signature aroma that is hard to forget. In fact, one search online and you will find plenty of blogs and recipes trying to replicate it. But did you know that the aroma stems from our founders’ passion for utilizing natural oils and scents to help promote an inner calm and balance?
As one of the first companies to utilize essential oils in this way, the Aveda brand has even been said to have coined the term aromatherapy.
While this practice and knowledge has grown over the years, we are proud to have been one of the first to bring the practice into our products and branding.
Big Earth Spender
While the founder of Aveda, Horst Rechelbacher, sprinkled in many holistic philosophies into our brand that we are proud to carry on today, there is one that stands out. We not only embrace the mission to being a global leader in promoting and protecting our planet.
Each year during the month of April, the Aveda brand holds multiple fundraisers, awareness events, and activities for the sole purpose of giving back to our planet. From helping to dig wells in Africa, to promoting wildlife and water conservation, Aveda has been one of the largest fundraisers in the United States with over $56 million raised since 1999.
A Big Gust of Wind
While Earth Month is a big event for Aveda, we don’t just practice these standards one month out of the year. We are proud to embrace this philosophy year round!
One of the biggest ways we spread this dedication is in our use of wind-power in our main manufacturing plant in Minneapolis, Minnesota. This plant produces more than half of our products that are sold worldwide, and is operated 100% by renewable energy.
A Midwest Classic, By Accident
With all the wind powering their manufacturing plant in Minnesota, you may think that it was the gusting breezes that brought Aveda to the midwest, but you would be wrong. Their arrival here, was purely by accident – literally.
After a car accident stranded our founder for an extended period of time, Horst found himself working in a local salon, and then falling in love. With his new wife by his side, he decided to set down roots and begin a new life. That new life opened the door for some amazing new products.
A World-Wide Family
Aveda may have begun in the Midwest but it has truly reached across the globe. From our humble beginnings with clove shampoo and a bathtub, we have expanded to over 65 Aveda brand schools, and thousands upon thousands of Aveda brand salons. All of this growth needs a whole lot of talent, and with over 500,000 Aveda professionals working on nearly every content we are proud to be spreading our beauty, and our philosophy.
When you are an Aveda professional, you are joining a global family of beauty.
